The answer may surprise you.
Debbie Gartner – The Flooring Girl explains it all for us in a concise explanation of the differences between engineered hardwoods and solid hardwoods — as well as the Pro’s and Con’s of each.
Engineered hardwoods? — it’s “real” hardwood — see her explanation. Cost and installation are key issues for any new floor and depending on your current flooring — the choices you make can inflate the cost or keep it in check.
For example, many homes in Houston are on concrete slabs and she explains that since solid hardwoods require a plywood subfloor … engineered hardwoods may be a better choice for you:
Her discussion of the Pro’s and Con’s of each will help you sort through your choices. BOTH can be sanded — and she tells you what to watch out for!“If you have a concrete sub-floor, generally, engineered flooring will be less expensive and involve fewer complications when it comes to height. If you need to install a plywood subfloor (3/4″ thick) and then solid hardwood (3/4″ thick), you have added 1 1/2″ inches in height. This can sometimes create issues with doors (especially exterior doors especially if they are metal) as there may not be enough clearance for the doors.”
Whether you are a homeowner contemplating renovation, or a real estate agent offering an opinion to a client, the information provided by Debbie Gartner about hardwood flooring is spot on. Bookmark her website when you visit, she is a frequent blogger, an undeniable expert in flooring and her website is an AWESOME resource for any / all questions about flooring materials and installation.
