Well, according to the City of Houston Architectural and Historical records, that was the price on 3375 Del Monte Drive when it was constructed and listed for sale in 1935.
It was purchased the summer of 1936 for $32,500 cash, as reported in both the Houston Chronicle and the Houston Post. Harry Hilliard was the purchaser, and it has subsequently come to be known as “The Hilliard House”. Susan Hilliard was one of the seven founders of the Garden Club of Houston and the gardens and grounds are well laid out with many mature trees and flowering shrubs.
The home has remained within the same family since its construction, with few structural changes. It is a protected landmark by the City of Houston, and it is back on the real estate market for the first time since 1935.
Located around the corner from the River Oaks Country Club it sits on a large lot in the “old” section of River Oaks. The residence retains many features and attributes original to the house … like slate roof, pegged hardwood floors, staircase with carved mahogany balustrade, tall steel casement windows and an en suite bath for each bedroom. I cannot emphasize enough how extremely unusual it was to build a house in 1935 with a bathroom for each bedroom. But that builder’s vision can indeed be providential to the 2015 buyer, as it makes the home easy to update.

Nobody builds like this anymore, it really is peeking backwards in time to when oil gushed out of wooden derricks and River Oaks was on the edge of the prairie, far from downtown.
